What do the Holidays Mean to You?

When I think of the Holiday Season, I think of all the fun that I have spending time with my family. It is a bittersweet time because, as it goes in life, my family has suffered losses but it has also grown over the course of the passing years. It's a great time to see how the younger members of my extended family have grown and it's also a time to remember those who are no longer here. 

The thing about life and this time of year is that traditions for each family are started. As my siblings moved off and got married, changes occurred in how the entire family gets together to celebrate the holidays. From time to time, sometimes a brother or sister and their family can't make the trip because of one thing or another. What I find fascinating is that as time passes, technology makes it easier to spend a little time with those who can't be there. Between Facetime and Skype, the world has shrunk enough that its not such a disappointment. 

Another thing that I enjoy is watching all the kids open their presents. I remember being a kid and feeling so excited the night before Christmas. It's a miracle that I ever got any sleep. The other thing that I remember from my younger days was that my parents and grandparents never seems to be as excited to open their presents like the rest of us children. I understand it now that giving is a little bit more fun than receiving. That's not to say that a heartfelt gift won't hit a soft spot in my heart or that an unexpected gift won't excite me in that moment. In the long run, I just enjoy watching the smiles.
