Room Themes for Your Home

Are you Going for a Particular Theme in Your Room?

Whether it's the Dining Room, the Living Room, or a Bedroom, if you are going for a theme, you will need to do some planning. If you've never thought about having a theme, then here are some examples of them.

Tuscan

When most people think of Tuscan-style furniture, they think of rural Italy. While getting imported Italian furniture may be an expensive way of obtaining this theme, there are other ways to get this type of look without breaking the bank. Look for furniture with aged finishes and/or intricate patterns. You can also buy upholstered furniture with robust textures that are neutral and earthen toned. If you really want your room to look the part, you may even go so far as to tile the floor with terracotta tiles. Just make sure that you emphasize the furniture with natural light by arranging the pieces to catch the sun from the windows.

Rustic

While some people may think of animal hides and horned skulls as rustic themed, the focus can be on other things. In the past, this theme was full of dark, unpainted wood, but in recent years, a lighter and more polished style has emerged that still feels natural and inviting. Look for unpainted wooden furniture that shows the natural grain. It can still have polish and varnish so long as you can still see those natural lines. As for sofas and loves seats, leather furniture in darker to medium tones is what you need. Wood paneled walls and beamed ceilings help to complete this look if you are going all out. As for any metal items, just make sure they aren't polished.

Colors

You don't have to have a particular style in mind to have a themed room. The theme could be that you choose a certain color and fill the room with it and other colors that compliment it. This option really has no set rules. Go with your personality and you can't mess things up. If you want pink, then think pink! The sky is the limit when it comes to a color-themed room even if you aren't choosing sky blue. The only thing that may get dicey is picking the right furniture you need to stick with the color of your choice.

In the End

When it's all said and done, your room can be themed off anything you want. If you like fish tanks, a nautical theme may be the way to go. You could arrange your room and choose the best colors to show off that magnificent saltwater tank and all its inhabitants. If you like to collect things, you can theme your room in a way that showcases what you love. In the end, that's the beauty of it all; you get to be you and show it off.

What is Your Favorite Type of Movie?

Sitting and Enjoying a Movie

How often do you go out and watch a movie at the theater? Chances are that you don't go as often as you used to. Box Office numbers have been dwindling for the past decade and it all points towards the advent of one thing. Streaming services have come a long way since Netflix made its debut. Whether you see just as many or fewer movies in the theater, this can largely be contributed to how quickly a movie will come out on either DVD or a streaming service. Now, we all know that nothing can compare to watching a movie on the big screen and paying $176.98 for popcorn and drinks, but it's because of that price tag that some people have been opting to just wait until the movie is viewable from home.

Another reason that people may not be going to see as many movies as they used to is that it seems Hollywood is running out of ideas. Every time you turn around, they are remaking a movie that came out 20-30 years ago. It seems like the idea of a new story to tell is just too much trouble when you can just take an existing property and put a new coat of paint on it. Nonetheless, movies that don't have a blockbuster budget can luckily find a media platform on these new streaming services.

A Comfortable Couch

Of course, you will want to have a comfortable place to sit and watch your shows. Whether you sit in a recliner, a love seat, or on a sofa, you won't enjoy that show to the fullest if you are constantly having to reposition due to bad support. Even if you are just using the couch to take a nap, you want it to be comfortable. I know, that's kind of a given statement, but your couch may not be giving you the support you need and you may not know it. Over time, cushions will degrade and they just don't support you like when they were new. Take the time to think about how long you've had your couch. If you can't remember specifically, you might want to think about a replacement.

Making Your Bed... Better!

Taking "Making Your Bed" up a Notch!

When it comes to bedroom sets, a lot of people may think that means the furniture that makes a bedroom complete. Bed Frames, mattresses, dressers, vanities, and other pieces of bedroom furniture are definitely part of the list of items that make up the list of important, if not essential ones to your bedroom. While having these aforementioned things will help to up the comfort level of any bedroom, there are other, often overlooked articles that you may not even know you need for your bed and mattress.

The First Line of Defense for Your Mattress

A mattress protector is something that a lot of people don't consider getting when they purchase a new bedroom set. These protective layers provide a guard against dust mites, stains, and liquids. Some people don't like them because they can make the bed feel too hot when you sleep. Good news, though, they have ones that are scientifically formulated to help keep you cool when you sleep. This can be the first step in making your bed a better place to sleep and prolonging the life of your mattress at the same time.

Let's Talk Sheets

The right set of sheets can transform your bed into the most comfortable place in the house. Having a nice set of high thread count sheets can make the difference between feeling like you are sleeping in sackcloth or feeling like you are sleeping at the Ritz. Aside from how some high-quality sheets can transform the comfort level of your sleep, they also provide another protective layer for your mattress. Our skin produces oil and it sheds naturally so that combines into a one-two combo punch that can really degrade your mattress over time. If you aren't using sheets, or if you aren't washing them consistently, you run the risk of saturating the top layer of your mattress with all the things dust mites love to eat. As gross as it may sound, they love to eat your shed skin and if they proliferate, they can cause allergies to flare up.

Now for Some Pillow Talk

There is a great debate about what is the best pillow, from memory foam to your standard pillow, it really all boils down to preference. One thing is certain, if you don't have some good pillows that give you the support you need, you won't have a good night's sleep. Of course, with pillows, comes pillowcases. It's the same concept as with your mattress; the coverings give a protective layer between you and your pillow so the mites and other nasty things don't build up. As with sheets, washing pillowcases regularly will help keep dust and other allergens from affecting your sleep. You can have the nicest things in your bedroom, but if the quality of your sleep is bad its all for nothing.

How to Clean and Care for Leather Furniture

Leather Furniture: How to Clean and Care

Leather is a surprisingly low-maintenance yet durable material. However, leather furniture does require some upkeep every now and then. This upkeep may come in the form of regular cleaning and occasional emergency spill removal. Or, if your leather furniture is looking a little worn or tired, these suggestions may help breathe fresh life into it.

Leather Furniture Cleaning

Step 1: Vacuuming

This step allows you to remove any dust and other loose particles before you begin wiping down your furniture. You will want to use the brush attachment to get down in any seams and crevices. When you are done with the vacuuming, you will want to take a dry cloth and gently wipe across all the cushions. A microfiber cloth works exceptionally well for this part. Also, while you are doing this, you can inspect for any problem areas that may require special attention.

Step 2: Cleaning Problem Spots

For routine cleaning, just wiping down the leather furniture with a damp cloth will work. However, you want to be cautious during this step so that you do not oversaturate your leather. For any spots or problem areas, a simple mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water is all you need to do routine cleaning. Depending on how big the item is that you are cleaning, mix the appropriate amount in a small bucket. Take your cloth and dip a small portion of it into the mixture. Make sure the fabric you are using is wrung out so that it is only damp. You don’t want it to be sopping wet and dripping or anything. Wipe down the leather and make sure that you are rinsing the cloth out every few strokes. This action will keep from spreading any dirt that the vacuum may have missed.

Step 3: Drying Wipedown

Quickly after you have wiped down your leather furniture with water or the vinegar mixture, you will want to use a soft dry cloth to go back over the whole thing. You really want to avoid letting any liquid sit on your leather for much time at all. One of the worst things that can happen is for any liquid to soak into the leather and saturate it.

Leather Furniture Stain Removal

While leather can be resilient when it comes to stains, the greatest enemy is time. The quicker you notice a spill, the easier it will be to clean. We all know that life happens and sometimes you just don’t see something until it’s too late. When it comes to greasy stains, you can use baking soda to try and draw out the stain. Depending on how long it has set, you may need to leave the baking soda on there for a few hours. Just wipe the baking soda off with a cloth afterward.

For ink stains or pen marks, rubbing alcohol may do the trick. Dab a little bit on a cotton ball and wipe until the stain comes off. You may have to use several of the cotton balls if the stain is sizable. Alcohol evaporates much more quickly than water, but you still want to make sure you aren’t using too much.

When it comes to household cleaners and chemicals, you need to be cautious. Any cleaner with detergent or a solvent can do more harm than good. Of course, as with any cleaning, you should test what you are going to use on an inconspicuous spot before attempting to clean. Just in case, it isn't right for your leather, you don’t risk making the matter worse. If all else fails, it may be time to get professional help or to think about replacing the piece.

Moisturizing Leather

As seasons change, so can your leather furniture. Occasionally, you may need to moisturize your sofa or recliner. As leather dries out, it can start to crack and tear apart. While there are several methods that people claim are safe, Bob Vila recommends using lemon essential oil. Using a clean cloth, apply 10-15 drops of the oil and massage into the surface. Not only can it help to prevent cracks, but it leaves a fresh, clean scent.
