Furniture Arrangement and the Flow of Your Room

Arranging Your Living Room Furniture
Better Homes & Gardens- Arrange living room furniture can be difficult when you don’t know what you’re doing. The flow might not be right, or it just doesn't feel right. Well, here a few tips to keep in mind to help you make your living room feel comfortable and make the most of your living space.

Arrangement Tips

You may need to have a pretty good idea of how you would like the flow of your room to keep. Since this is a key notion to have, understanding the foot traffic in and out of your living room can help you to have a much better idea of how to start arranging or rearranging your furniture.  Keep in mind how you want your room to function and what rooms are connected to the living space. Is this going to be a place for a family game night or is it going to be more of a place for everyone to get together and watch the big game or the latest hot show? This will help to determine the focal point of the room. If it is a family game night, then a coffee table surrounded by chairs would be a great focal point to design the room around. If it is a big game or show to be watched, then the focal point will most likely be the entertainment center. Other focal points to consider are picture windows, fireplaces, or other fixtures built into your home. A fireplace can make for a great place for the family to gather around and relax on a cold winter night. You will want to arrange the chairs in a room to help encourage interaction. So the seats should face each other and be pulled away from the wall to help people connect.

Oh Noes! Bed Bugs!

Bedbugs are small, oval, brownish insects that live on the blood of animals or humans, according to an article by WebMD. These little suckers are about the size of an apple seed when they are fully grown. But, after a good feeding, their bodies swell and are a reddish color.
Female bedbugs can lay hundreds of eggs, each of which is about the size of a speck of dust, over a lifetime. One good thing about these little pests is they do not transmit diseases.
These little boogers can enter your home through luggage, clothing, used beds and couches… Their flat bodies make it possible to hide in tiny spaces, about the width of a credit card. So think about those thin seams in your bookshelf, bed frames, and headboards. They especially like those spots for easy access to their food, us. Over time they can spread throughout your home.
They are mainly active at night. They feed three to ten minutes until they become engorged. Their bit is mostly painless, but they do tend to become itchy. Some people may attribute the itching to other causes like mosquitoes. Some signs that may indicate you have bedbugs include:
  • Blood stains on your sheets or pillowcases
  • Dark or rusty spots of bedbug excrement on sheets and mattresses, bed clothes, and walls
  • Bedbug fecal spots, egg shells, or shed skins in areas where bedbugs hide
  • An offensive, musty odor from the bugs' scent glands

If you have found signs these pests are present, remove all bedding, check and wash then in hot water, also dry them in the highest and safe drying setting. You also may want to check inside books, telephones or radios, the edge of the carpet, and even in electrical outlets. Hiring a professional pest control is always a good idea or use products that can be used safely in all rooms. Just be sure to follow the directions correctly.

Seasons Are Changing - Outdoor Furniture

Texas Fall Days: Gather on the Patio

Depending on where you live in the huge State of Texas, you can have an extended summer that can last into December. I know I have experienced my fair share of mid-80s days in December over the past couple of decades. Throughout the Fall, there can be quite a few mild weekends where you aren't forced to stay inside to beat the heat. These times are great opportunities to be outdoors and do some work or have some fun. Whether you work or play, everyone needs a great place to sit and enjoy some relaxation. In my opinion, there is no better way to achieve this goal than to have a great set of outdoor furniture.

Decisions in Purchasing Patio Furniture

If you have never bought any outdoor furnishings, there are a few things to decide before purchasing any items. Consider these questions. Will the items be covered by a structure? How much sunlight will they be getting? Will I be entertaining many guests? After you have answered these questions, you can move forward to the shopping stage. With the answers in mind, you will be able to view the selection and make a smart purchase for your home and family.

Where to Find Outdoor Furniture for Sale in Abilene, TX

There are many options for places to buy patio furniture, especially with the internet. Typically, outdoor furniture is built to hold up to the elements that come with nature. When you order online from somewhere that's not local, you can run into trouble if the items aren't what you expected. They could be poor quality and wear out in the sun way sooner than what is reasonable. The hassle of returning large items via mail is a big one.

At the Pierce Gallery Furniture stores in Abilene, we pride ourselves on giving good hometown service to our customers and having true discount prices on our stock. If you are looking to add or replace some items in your home, visit us online to find the store nearest you!

Homebody? No Problem-o

Nothing Like a Weekend at Home

During the week, most people tend to stay in and around the house. After work, the desire to go out and play may not be there. On the weekends, however, the inclination to go out and have fun around town will be much stronger. Sometimes, that desire to go out and pall around with friends or family just isn't there. That's when the names come out. If you decide to spend a weekend lounging at home, you may get called a couch potato, stick in the mud, or even an introvert.

Technology, Furniture, and Good Veggin'

No matter what people say, it can be healthy to have some "me-time". Technology has really come far in its advances on the entertainment front. No longer are we shackled with the chains of the video rental policy. One click of a button and you can watch almost any movie you desire. Of course, with all good things (even water) you can have too much of it.  However, since you may be spending more time cruising Netflix or Hulu, you may notice that the couch is becoming less and less comfortable. Perhaps you may notice that your old entertainment center can't contain your Blu-Ray player, game system, tv, and all the other accessories. If your furniture is giving you concerns, it may be time to look for some new items for your home.

Did you share a Bedroom with a Sibling?

Do You Have Children that Share a Bedroom?

Siblings have shared rooms since the dawn of time. Today's age isn’t like our grandparents and great-grandparents time when six to seven siblings all shared one room. However, due to rising costs of living expenses, rent, and mortgages, space has become a hot commodity and with multiple children, sharing a room may be a viable solution. This does not mean that the children that share a space are not entitled to their own area and their own belongings.

When I was growing up, my brother and I shared a room throughout my middle and high school years. It was a tiny room and sharing the room was difficult. Cleaning always devolved into a contest to see who could blame more of the mess on the other. However, when it came to sleeping, as long as I could fall asleep before my brother and the resulting snoring, it was ok since we had our own beds. In the end, we found a way to arrange the space in a way that maximized our own personal space and coexistence was much better.

The issue with sharing a bedroom is that siblings can be territorial and disputes arise over personal space. The best way to ensure that each child doesn't have any issues is to arrange the room to afford the most unoccupied area. This is very important because it allows for them to be able to have their own personal space to retreat to even if they don’t have the entire room to themselves. Their own bed is also a place where they can express their own personality. They can decorate their bed and the walls around their bed anyway they wish which helps to individualize their own piece of the bedroom.

Sometimes it's Best to Invest in Bunk Beds

Bunk beds are perfect for children who have to share a room because they offer them their own sleep space all while maximizing surface area. This will allow the children to have more space to play and have personal belongings. In my own personal experience, bunk beds work better with siblings who get along, for the most part. Having one bed on top of the other may also help to eliminate the temptation of staying awake and playing all night. Bunk beds come in many different shapes and sizes so it’s easy to find one that will suit the needs of your children. For example, many parents like the bunk beds that do not come with a ladder but actually come with steps because they are safer and easier for the children to climb. They also tend to offer added space because they have drawers for clothes attached to them.

Whats the Worst that Could Happen?

Accidents Happen - New Furniture Purchased

I've done some dumb things in my lifetime that are funny to recount. Some of them were accidents that resulted in destruction and other times my faux pas was more deliberate. No matter what I did or how it happened, these are a couple of the stories of how I needed to find new furniture for sale.

Unintentional Consequences

After living away from my family for a few years, I decided to move back to my hometown. While I was away, I had managed to work my way up the ladder at a franchise restaurant. I made a few furniture purchases and found out real quick that some items weren't made for old houses with narrow doors. I had a nice leather couch that wasn't going to fit inside the new house into which I was moving.  First I decided to eyeball the measurement and cut the legs off the bottom. Then I realized I should have actually measured it because it still would not fit. I decided to take off the door and squeeze it through. Mid-squeeze, I heard this awful ripping noise, but so I gave up and began trying to extract the sofa. I ended up pulling various items off the doorway like the strike plate and some trim. So, here I was stuck with a couch that looked like it was 10 years older than it was. I just toted it to the side of the road and hoped that someone would pick it up.

Intentional Consequences

I know this might elicit some groans from people, but my older brother and I are Packers fans. One year during the playoffs, they played a particularly close game and ended up losing. I decided that I needed to let out some frustration. Hindsight is always 20/20 so I'm not too proud of this, but I took my armchair outside and decided to see how far I could throw it. My brother and I are relatively big guys so we made a game out of it. After the demolition was done and my brother had shown me up, I realized that I need a new recliner. In all honesty, I think I might have done that simply to justify getting a new one, anyway.

A New Home May Constitute a Trip to the Furniture Store

Did you just buy a new home?

If you have just purchased a new home then what better time to buy new furniture? Nothing will make your new home feel fresh like replacing the old furniture you had with modern pieces. You may want to upgrade your living room furniture as well as your bedroom furniture especially if the new place has more room than your previous residence. If your new home contains space that your old location did not have, it could begin to fell a bit spartan. This is the perfect time to get the furniture set that you’ve always wanted for your living room. Maybe you’ve always wanted a nice recliner, but you didn’t have space for it. If your new home has the open area, it would be the perfect time to purchase one. It’s important to have comfortable furniture in your living room because that’s the first impression people get of your home when they walk in the door. Obviously, if you are purchasing a new home, you’re very proud of it, and you’re going to want people to come over and see it. Therefore, you’re going to want to make sure that you have beautiful furniture. You want every aspect of your new home to feel fresh.

New bedroom furniture

It is also essential to have modern bedroom furniture. Mattresses have about a 5-10 year lifespan so you may need to update your sleeping conditions. You may also have more space in your new bedroom so you can maybe fit a vanity or an armoire along with your bed, side tables, and dresser. Having a vanity in your room will help to clear up space and keep your bathroom organized because your makeup and hair products can reside within the vanity instead of on your bathroom counter. This is not only more convenient, however, but it also makes your home look much nicer and more organized. One of the worst things to see when going into someone’s bathroom is the counter to be full of hair products makeup in any other thing that people tend to clutter their countertops in the bathroom.
