I always wondered how my friends would have to buy new furniture so much more often than I did. However, after having two children, I realized it wasn't my friends, but their kids who were doing the lion's share of ruining a sofa. From games of "the floor is lava" to pretending to be pirates, my kids have definitely been a major source of wear and tear on the old living room furniture. It is definitely a bittersweet problem to have because, yes, on one hand, they were messing up some stuff that's not exactly cheap, but they weren't attached to a tablet like a fiend. The days of me yelling at them to be careful and not fall while walking across some couch cushions are all but gone now that my oldest is a teenager. So, I do look fondly back to those days where both my daughters weren't too cool for each other. 

Back in my day, we would play games, as well. We, however, didn't live in a time where creeps are so prolific and kids could play outside unsupervised. Things were different back in the late '70s. Creeps were still around, I guess they just did a better job of hiding out or something. Instead of playing pirates on the living room furniture (because my mom would have tanned my hide), we went outside to play. We even took real knives out of the kitchen when we played pirates. My friends and I had a blast because sometimes we would try to get strangers involved and pretend to rob them. It was so fun because they would play along with us and act really scared and give us their wallets and purses before running and calling for help. Those were the days. My friends and I played pirates until we were in our 20s... Just kidding about that. I totally stole that from an older Saturday Night Live skit from the '90s.

Kids grow up so fast. I swear I blinked a couple times and my oldest is in high school, now. With that being said, it is an uphill battle every evening to get that child into bed at a decent hour. I have done everything from removing the TV in her room to making a new rule about no phones after 8 pm. Still, the fight is on as soon as she knows I am even hinting at bedtime. 

Of course, teens are still growing and even though they think they are grown-ups. Because of that, they still need to get more rest than people whose bodies are done growing. My youngest went through a phase around six years old where she was afraid of the dark and refused to go to sleep without a fight. Luckily, she seems ready for bedtime except for Saturday evenings. If only both my daughters could get on the same page, how easy life would be.

I really do try to make sure they have a good nights rest since they are back in school. I would be embarrassed if they came home with a note because the teacher thinks they are sleep-deprived.

If you have ever cooked with both a gas range and an electric range, you know they both have some pros and cons to using them. I would like to talk about my favorite type, the electric range. The reason I have that opinion is that, to me, they have more pros than cons. 

Cheaper Price

For the most part, buying a new range will be cheaper is you opt for an electric unit. Typically, a gas range will cost more than its electrical counterpart. This difference in price has to do with the way the heat is delivered. An electric range just needs a heating element and fan while gas needs all kinds of pipes and flues to evenly distribute heat. You also don't need ignitors to light any gas. 

Another thing to consider is that if you are switching from gas to electric, it will typically cost less to run the lines you need if they don't already exist. If you go from electric to gas, however, the cost to convert can rise very quickly when running new pipes and whatnot. 

Cooking

When it comes to cooking, electric ranges heat up faster and maintain a more consistent temperature. A lot of the newer models have special features like a fifth element that is only used to keep food warm. You also just have to turn a knob to heat things up instead of fiddling with matches or unreliable ignitors. With that being said, it is way easier to regulate the heat of stovetop burners. Nothing is worse than scalded pans. 

Part of cooking is the cleanup and, in my experience, it is way easier to clean up an electric stovetop. The oven I have is a glass top and I enjoy not having to remove burners and whatnot to clean. 

Safety

The main concern with gas ovens is a leak. With an electric range, you don't have to worry about natural gas leaks or catching your house on fire that way. While you can still burn food in or on an electric range, you don't have that added worry of a leaky line or unlit pilot light. One other thing to consider is that since there are no open flames, its less likely you will catch something other than what you are cooking on the fire. Anyone who has spilled a little grease on a gas stovetop knows how quickly things can become dangerous.
