A Wide Range of... Ranges!

Some people call them stoves and other people call them ovens. I used to do the same thing until a chef I know corrected me. A range is a piece of kitchen equipment that has both a stove and an oven. The stove is the part that is on top and has gas or electric burners. The oven is the part you actually open up and put food inside to bake or broil. These parts are sometimes sold separately, and I am sure you've been in a kitchen that has them in different places. In my house, I have my oven embedded in an outcropping with cabinets above and below. The stovetop is placed separately on the countertop just a few feet away from the oven. Above my stove is a ventilation hood that helps me out big-time when I managed to burn something. 

Because kitchen space is somewhat of an issue, many people use ranges instead of having their stoves and ovens in different places. I, honestly don't like having them the way I do. I am patiently waiting for one to break down so I can replace them. I just don't know what I will do with the big hole that will be left if it is my oven that goes first. I supposed I could just leave it in there? Anyway, in my opinion, ranges are the way to go because they have everything you need in one convenient package. While I would have to get used to bending down to place food in the oven of the range, I think I could get used to it quickly.
