The One Recliner to Rule Them All

The Chair in Which Only One May Sit

If you grew up before the internet was in every home, chances are, you understand what the title of this blog means. In my household, and in most of my friends' homes, there was that one chair which everyone knew not to sit. This chair belonged to the dad of the household. In my family, Dad's Recliner was a bastion of wonder. On the few occasions where I was brave enough to sneak a seat in the armchair, that moment was always short lived as I was scolded by either my mother or my siblings for sitting there. I always wondered why it was that even if my dad wasn't home, his chair was off limits.

My mom, had her own recliner, as well. And while she would make us get up from it when she wanted to sit down, she would let us use it when she wasn't occupying it. This just lent even more mystery to the place where my dad would sit and watch football. I tested boundaries by playing with my army men on the armrest. As long as I didn't leave them there after I was done playing, it seemed that this action was ok to do. So, I sat on the armrest and was quickly told not to sit that way on any of the recliners in the house.

As I got older, I gave up trying to figure it out. I stopped sneaking into the chair mainly because of the fact that it didn't feel any better than the sofa or Mom's armchair. Fast forward some and when I  was in my mid 20's, I worked for about 5 years alongside my dad. One day at the break table, one of our co-workers made mention that I had sat down in my dad's seat. My father had taken a day of vacation and wasn't at work so I decided to sit a little closer to everyone. In one quick moment, I reverted back to my 5-year-old self and jumped up to get out the seat. After everyone at the break table began laughing at me, I sheepishly sat down. When the ruckus died off, I spoke up and told everyone that it wasn't that funny since every one of them knew not to sit in dad's chair. They all agreed in varying mutterances.

This phenomenon with the chair of the paterfamilias stoked itself anew inside me after that moment. I finally asked my dad one day why no one was ever allowed in his chair when we were growing up. To my surprise, he acted surprised as well. He seemed genuinely confused by the question. Apparently, that had just been a rule my mom had made and the only reason she issued it was because her mom had that same guideline when she was a kid.

Save Money this Winter with these Tips

Winterize Your Home

When winter comes around, it can cost a lot to heat your home. Here are some money saving tips that you can use this winter to try and reduce the bills that roll in each month. While to some people. these tips might seem obvious, however, this could be a valuable set of ideas to some others, as well.

1) Change Filters - Filters in your heating and cooling system will get clogged up over time and unless you are using reusable filters, they will need to be changed. When airflow to your furnace is restricted, the power demands are increased and that means more electricity is needed to do the job. If you adhere to a regular schedule of swapping out dirty filters with clean ones throughout the year, you may already be on top of this.

2) Reverse the Direction of Ceiling Fans - You may think you would only run them during warmer seasons but done correctly, you can reduce your heating bill by having your fans spin clockwise. This action will help circulate the warm air that gathers as heat rises.

3) Use Draft Snakes - Draft Snakes aren't really snakes, although you can put little googly eyes on them for fun. They are long tubes of cloth filled with sand or other grit to give them heft. You lay them across the bottom of doors so that drafts are reduced. If you don't feel like making or buying one, you can just roll up a towel to use.

4) Cover Unused Vents - If you have a vent in a room that no one uses, you are paying for heat that you really don't use. if the vent can be closed, simple, if not, you may either want to cover it in plastic or buy a solid cover.

5) Watch that Water Heater - Hot water heaters typically come set to a standard 140 degrees, however, you may or may not need to generate that much hot water. You could turn the temperature down to 130 or even 120 and save money. Also, insulating your water lines even though they are on the inside of your house can help them to retain heat and save in the long run, as well.

6) Dress Warmly - While this is pretty obvious, just putting on an extra pair of socks and a sweater can help keep you from turning that thermostat up too high. Chances are you will be using that to go outside anyway.

How do You Relax on Your Furniture?

Taking a Break from it All

In today's world, relaxing has become an art form. From innovations in entertainment to the actual sofas that we sit on while we entertain ourselves. Movies on demand, power recliners, popcorn in minutes, pizza delivered to your door, virtual reality video games in your living room and so much more allow us the opportunity to just sit back and forget about things for a moment. Sadly, with all of these ways to take a load off, people still have trouble taking some time for themselves. I know that not everyone has the luxury to lounge around for hours on end, but there are several benefits for taking some time for yourself every day.

Benefits of Relaxation and Alone Time

1) It helps you recharge your brain which can increase productivity and concentration.

2) You can unwind and de-stress your body which may lead to happier moods and more pleasant engagements with other people in your life.

3) It allows for self-discovery and deeper contemplation of one's self. When you are alone, you are more inclined to think about yourself.

4) Alone time can help strengthen your relationships with your spouse and children. It also improves problem-solving.

Now, the world isn't perfect and so it may be harder for some people to find the time to be alone with themselves and relax. Single parents and sole proprietors of a business may find themselves thinking they can't ever get a moment alone. If that is the case, then you have to focus on quality over quantity. The average person in the U.S. spends a little over 5 hours a day doing leisure activities. If you find yourself way short of this number, you may be in need of a change. If you are in a situation where you feel you can't get any time to yourself, there are a few options you can try. First, make sure that you are doing things that you want to do as well as the things others in your household want. Another option is to wake up earlier than everyone else in the house by 30 minutes or so and use that time for you.

What Some People Will do to Sit on a Chair

The Golden Throne and the Warhammer Universe

In this blog, I am going to expose a bit of the sci-fi lover in me. There is a series of books based on a tabletop game called Warhammer 40k. It's a little nerdy to be talking about books based on what amounts to a massive board game, I know. However, in today's day and age, nerdy is no longer the insult it once was. These books, for the most part, are set in the year 41st millennium. Mankind has spread across the galaxy. However, there has been a 10,000-year civil war raging that has split the human race into two factions; the loyalists to the Emperor of Mankind and a group of separatists devoted to a set of evil primordial forces called the Chaos gods. If I haven't lost you yet, understand that there is a lot of nuance and intrigue that goes on in this futuristic world. It's a place of harsh conditions and even harsher laws. In the grim far future, there is only war.

The Golden Throne

One of the more interesting things in this dystopian future is that the Emperor of Mankind was mortally wounded and he was interred into a machine called the golden throne. It is, what I consider, a life support system designed to keep the Emperor alive. Now, since this is a science fiction book series, the Emperor has been alive for longer than any human should ever live. Now grievously wounded, this last ditch effort to keep him alive requires some hefty upkeep. People willingly devote their life essence to keep him "alive" though he has never moved once since being placed on the golden throne. This all happened in the 31st millennium. 100 centuries later, everyone worships the entombed, yet not dead, Emperor as a god and fight countless battles in his name.

What was Your First Furniture Purchase?

That First Major Purchase

There are some things that I buy and it just makes me feel a special feeling. For instance, when I buy a fresh set of tires for my car, there is a nice feeling of security that comes with that purchase. Now, when I was younger, that feeling also came with a sense of pride and accomplishment because getting a new set of tires at once was a big-time budget buster. Until the moment I bought my first set of tires, I had either bought them individually (which they would tell me was a bad idea) or I had bought used tires. That's a gamble, I know, but it was one I was willing to make in my youth.  Getting those tires made me feel like I was actually a grown human being. Along the same line of thinking, I remember when I made my first furniture purchase.

I had bought various items for my apartment when I first moved from my parents' house. As a 19-year-old, what I could afford was items that were made of particle board and came with assembly instructions. What I mean when I say "first piece of furniture" is that item that was the first one that wasn't a hand-me-down nor a garage sale purchase. I am talking about that first piece of furniture for sale in an actual furniture store. For me, it was a bed frame. I had been sleeping for a long time on a mattress on the floor. So, it was a change of pace after acquiring that bed because I no longer got up from the floor but I had to get off the bed and step down to the floor. It came with that same sense of security and accomplishment as the set of new tires. My first bed made me feel like a king.

Furniture Sets for the Home

Now, that feeling comes from getting a matching set. As I got older, I wanted things to look and feel better in my home. That bed, for all it did for my self-confidence, was old and worn out. My second-hand dresser and nightstand didn't match the bed either and I decided it was time to find my first new bedroom set for sale. My room had red walls (don't judge!) and so I went with a set with a dark stained finish. In the end, I guess it was a subconscious hunt for that same feeling mentioned earlier. Because when I found what I wanted, and everything was delivered and arranged, I felt it all over again.
