Save Money this Winter with these Tips

Winterize Your Home

When winter comes around, it can cost a lot to heat your home. Here are some money saving tips that you can use this winter to try and reduce the bills that roll in each month. While to some people. these tips might seem obvious, however, this could be a valuable set of ideas to some others, as well.

1) Change Filters - Filters in your heating and cooling system will get clogged up over time and unless you are using reusable filters, they will need to be changed. When airflow to your furnace is restricted, the power demands are increased and that means more electricity is needed to do the job. If you adhere to a regular schedule of swapping out dirty filters with clean ones throughout the year, you may already be on top of this.

2) Reverse the Direction of Ceiling Fans - You may think you would only run them during warmer seasons but done correctly, you can reduce your heating bill by having your fans spin clockwise. This action will help circulate the warm air that gathers as heat rises.

3) Use Draft Snakes - Draft Snakes aren't really snakes, although you can put little googly eyes on them for fun. They are long tubes of cloth filled with sand or other grit to give them heft. You lay them across the bottom of doors so that drafts are reduced. If you don't feel like making or buying one, you can just roll up a towel to use.

4) Cover Unused Vents - If you have a vent in a room that no one uses, you are paying for heat that you really don't use. if the vent can be closed, simple, if not, you may either want to cover it in plastic or buy a solid cover.

5) Watch that Water Heater - Hot water heaters typically come set to a standard 140 degrees, however, you may or may not need to generate that much hot water. You could turn the temperature down to 130 or even 120 and save money. Also, insulating your water lines even though they are on the inside of your house can help them to retain heat and save in the long run, as well.

6) Dress Warmly - While this is pretty obvious, just putting on an extra pair of socks and a sweater can help keep you from turning that thermostat up too high. Chances are you will be using that to go outside anyway.
