The Chair in Which Only One May Sit
If you grew up before the internet was in every home, chances are, you understand what the title of this blog means. In my household, and in most of my friends' homes, there was that one chair which everyone knew not to sit. This chair belonged to the dad of the household. In my family, Dad's Recliner was a bastion of wonder. On the few occasions where I was brave enough to sneak a seat in the armchair, that moment was always short lived as I was scolded by either my mother or my siblings for sitting there. I always wondered why it was that even if my dad wasn't home, his chair was off limits.
My mom, had her own recliner, as well. And while she would make us get up from it when she wanted to sit down, she would let us use it when she wasn't occupying it. This just lent even more mystery to the place where my dad would sit and watch football. I tested boundaries by playing with my army men on the armrest. As long as I didn't leave them there after I was done playing, it seemed that this action was ok to do. So, I sat on the armrest and was quickly told not to sit that way on any of the recliners in the house.
As I got older, I gave up trying to figure it out. I stopped sneaking into the chair mainly because of the fact that it didn't feel any better than the sofa or Mom's armchair. Fast forward some and when I was in my mid 20's, I worked for about 5 years alongside my dad. One day at the break table, one of our co-workers made mention that I had sat down in my dad's seat. My father had taken a day of vacation and wasn't at work so I decided to sit a little closer to everyone. In one quick moment, I reverted back to my 5-year-old self and jumped up to get out the seat. After everyone at the break table began laughing at me, I sheepishly sat down. When the ruckus died off, I spoke up and told everyone that it wasn't that funny since every one of them knew not to sit in dad's chair. They all agreed in varying mutterances.
This phenomenon with the chair of the paterfamilias stoked itself anew inside me after that moment. I finally asked my dad one day why no one was ever allowed in his chair when we were growing up. To my surprise, he acted surprised as well. He seemed genuinely confused by the question. Apparently, that had just been a rule my mom had made and the only reason she issued it was because her mom had that same guideline when she was a kid.
